Ports Traffic Analyzer What's New (Revision
History)
Release 2.34
- On some machines the
application produced an access violation when
the Install Provider button was pressed.
- IP-To-Country database
has been updated and covers nearly 60,000 IP
ranges translating to more than 2.9 billion IP
addresses.
Release 2.32
-
Archived files not visible in the Archives
folder when this folder
has particular attributes (like not allowing
indexing).
-
Depending on IPSec rules, a workstation within
Active Directory might face NT/Authority
enforced shutdown when joining the domain.
Release 2.3
-
Now, all data from
overlapped connections is captured.
Previously, for applications using overlapped
connections the count of bytes sent
and received was reported but some data was
not captured causing a mismatch in the totals.
-
Fixed, sockets from
overlapped connections were not reported by
AWPTA as closed when closed by the application
while an overlapped
operation was in progress.
-
Fixed, some applications
performing non-blocking I/O using the
so-called Select Model were unable to connect.
One such application
was the Pegasus mail reader.
-
Fixed, many local IPs still
showing 0.0.0.0 after a connection. Note that
before a connection is established or if the
socket is an unbound server socket it is
correct to show 0.0.0.0.
-
Fixed Windows 98
compatibility issues introduced in previous
releases. Tests show that now AWPTA work very
well on Windows 98. It
appears to work as well on Windows 95 with the
Winsock 2 update, although we are not
supporting anymore this OS.
-
Fixed, access violation
while grids were refreshing. This error was
random in nature but more common on slow
machines and under NT and Windows 9x.
-
Fixed, DNS service error on
Small Business Server 2003.
-
The Ports Database has been
update and contains more 140 records than the
previous 2.2 release.
-
IP-To-Country database has
been updated and covers 54,500 IP ranges
translating to more than 2.7 billion IP
addresses.
Release 2.2
-
Services not running under the Local
System Account could paralyse the network
services across the system, produce
NT/Authority induced shutdown and other
issues. This became more common under
Windows XP SP2. For their own nature
this does not apply to Windows 9x and Me
machines.
-
AWPTA.EXE might not launch, or take a very
long time to launch and then present
totally empty grids.
-
Processes terminated without a proper
cleanup, even for reasons unrelated to
AWPTA, could lead to a network slowdown
for the whole system.
-
With large Log Buffers, the Index Gauge
was reaching full capacity much earlier
than the other gauges. The maximum number
of pointers in the Index has been
increased from 300,000 to 600,000.
- The
Ports Database has been update and
contains more 300 records than the
previous 2.0x release. This includes a
large quantity of recent trojans.
-
IP-To-Country database has been updated
and covers 220 countries and nearly 52,000
IP ranges translating to about 2.6 billion
IP addresses.
Release 2.12
- Under
Options/Filters/Files, selecting not to
track files had no effect.
Release 2.11
- awpta.exe could
cause high CPU usage under Windows 98 and
Millenium edition,
even when expected to be idle.
Release 2.1
- Running a Web Site
on the local machine, was likely to crash
Internet Information Server when .ASP
pages are being served. This is a general
fix and solves issues with other software,
such as Zinio Delivery Manager.
- Tests have
show that this release is compatible with
Mcafee Personal Firewall and some releases
of Mcafee Antivirus which install a
Layered Service Provider. You need to
install AWPTA "after" McAfee, because the
LSP installed by McAfee does not respect
the protocol chain and installs directly
over the base protocols leaving AWPTA out
of the chain.
The solution found may solve problems with
part of the software mentioned at
http://www.atelierweb.com/pta.faq.htm,
but at the moment we can not confirm
or deny.
- Updated the Ports
and Countries from IP databases.
- Users that have
been updating the 2.0x Ports Database by
themselves and do not want to lose the
changes they have made may upgrade the
2.0x Ports Database to the 2.1 Ports
Database by running the included UpPDB.exe
software.
Release 2.01
- Ports Database
Browse and Connection Details were not
retrieving records where a range of IPs
exists, i.e, End IP is different than
Start IP.
Release 2.0
-
AWPTA
sessions can be optionally continued after
the computer reboots. Previously, when the
computer rebooted the Log Buffer was
initialized and reset for a new AWPTA
session with all data from
the previous session lost.
- The Processes
viewer pane, is now optionally
autorefreshable. The refreshing obeys to
an intelligent algorithm, although the
user must propose the number of seconds
for the refreshing interval
as a guide.
- The LSP
engine has been fully reviewed with
very significant stability gains.
Now, most people will keep it running full
time, non-stop. Try.
- The Packets viewer
grid is literally tens of times faster
than in previous 1.xx releases. Even large
multimegabyte data captures are displayed
almost instantly - so fast is it that the
Abort button, which was used in previous
releases to cancel tedious data
manipulation, was simply discarded.
- Captured data can
be saved in raw format. This is very
useful for reconstructing whatever came or
was sent across the line, such as html
pages, exe files or video and sound files.
This works both in the Traffic and in the
Archives page.
- The Ports Database
has been dramatically improved and
augmented. Now, it contains about 6000
records, covering more than 12000 port
references, more than twice the quantity
of releases 1.xx - making it, hands down,
the most comprehensive Ports database in
the market. The user interface is simply
great! Another important aspect is that
the user can edit, insert and delete
database records. WYSIWYG printing is
available as well.
- For any particular
line on the Details viewer grids (i.e., in
the Traffic and Archives pages), important
supplementary information can be retrieved
by right-clicking and selecting Connection
Details from the popup menu. This
information includes source and
destination ports information,
Assignment/Country IP information and IP
reverse lookup.
- AWPTA includes a
Countries from IP database, 99% reliable
on release date. This is a very useful
feature for fast assessment of where
connections are going or coming from.
- Booster.exe, an
AWPTA 1.xx helper application which was
loaded by default on Windows 9x machines,
was simply removed. Users disliked it,
complained about it and kept questioning
us about it. We found an alternative
solution to perform the same functionality
and discarded Booster. No regrets.
- From the Options
menu/Filters/Processes the user can decide
for a particular file whether he wants to
have it shown on the Processes viewer
grid, whether he wants AWPTA to track it
(even if not shown in the Processes viewer
pane) or whether he wants to block that
file from sending and receiving data.
These selections stick across sessions.
- By right-clicking
on the Processes viewer grid the user can
block network access or (try to) kill a
given process.
- Viewer grid colors
can be choosen from the Options menu. This
must satisfy users with notebooks and
other system where the default colors do
not provide adequate contrast.
- Processes and
Details grids sorting defaults can be
established from the Options menu.
- You can remove
columns from the grids, by right clicking
on the column header and unchecking the
column name. The new format will be kept
when saving or printing. It is also
possible to change the order of the grid
columns by dragging the column headers.
The new format is maintained as well when
saving or printing.
- We learnt from
experience that the Index Gauge was
reaching full capacity earlier than the
other gauges. The maximum number of
pointers in the Index has increased from
200,000 to 300,000.
- Many other smaller
enhancements and fixes.....
Release
1.1
- Updated the Ports
database to end of January 2002.
Official/unoffical port assignments, ports
currently used by programs and ports
currently used by trojans increased the
ports database in more than 10%.
- AWPTA has been
reviewed on the light of the last
Microsoft technology improvements for
Layered Service Providers.
- AWPTA now supports
machines with more than one CPU.
- The install program
has been renewed significantly reducing
the overall distribution size.
- Included Uninstall
shortcut on Start menu group.
- Booster.exe is not
installed on NT-technology operating
systems (it is not necessary).
- XP look-alike
changes on menus.
Release
1.03
- Further tunning of
the synchronizing mechanism was required.
- In some instances
the location of the Log Buffer remained
undefined. On NT/200, now only
Adminstrators can change the location of
the Log Buffer. This will default to the
AWPTA folder, however if unintentionally
the Registry key where this information is
contained is deleted it will default to
the root of drive C:
Release
1.02

stays on top but is not modal anymore.
- Self-check for
orphaned shortcut in Startup menu.
Release
1.01
- Shell32.dll 4.71 or
later is no more a requirement.
- Other small fixes.
